Mariachi: Mexican or French origin?

Mariachi, music from the Mexican heart

It is common that when someone mentions Mexico we think of TACOS and more TACOS ... and well, they are not wrong, since we consume them daily.
But I'm not here to talk about taquitos today. Maybe you've also thought about music and those beautiful costumes that Mariachis usually wear, how harmonious a serenade sounds at midnight and even makes you shout like a Mexican.
A group of mariachis is usually composed of violins, blow guitar, vihuelas, harp, and guitarrón or double bass, and in some areas even a drum, on the other hand, the modern mariachi has included the trumpet.
In Mexico we party more than admit- tell me it’s not true! Parties can last until dawn, we can’t forget about the morning bread and coffee. Over time and with the arrival of the Spaniards some instruments were introduced to our country, this led the way to continue the festivities longer ... Adding a good rhythm was not too much! This parties usually took place in small towns.

It all sounds very cool, right? But... Has this been the case forever?

The answer is no. At first, this type of musicians were not very recognized we could even say that they were even belittled by the aristocracy. It was until the Porfiriato that these group of musicians made themselves known.

In fact, before this time they only wore normal peasant clothes and hats.

By 1905 mariachis were considered a picturesque group worthy of presenting in forums, and that is why on Porfirio Díaz's birthday requested a mariachi group. In 1907, once again, President Diaz, marveled, invited them again to set the mood for a party in honor of the American secretary Elihu Root.

FUN FACT: This party was the first time that Mariachis wore charro suits, as they are currently known.

It is very curious, in fact, that something as ours and as Mexican as Mariachi has a name that does not come from an indigenous language, or from ancient Spanish, but from French.

There are those who say that the name “Mariachi” stayed because at the weddings at the time of the French intervention, the French soldiers began to refer to them as marriage - marriage in French - not only in the weddings they witnessed in Mexican lands, but to the music played in them. Finally, with time the name deformed from Marriach as we commonly know it, Mariachi.

The truth is that many studies reject this theory, as it is rare that before the arrival of the French there was no name or word that identified these musicians. Especially because the first record of them was at the time of the Colony and they were originally from Cocula, Jalisco.

Mexican Phrase: “Achis achis los mariachis.” Expression used to denote when a person is surprised by an unexpected event.
On the other hand, it is said that in the states of Jalisco and Michoacán there is a tree whose wood is used to manufacture guitars, a tree supposedly called “Mariachi”, something that the natives deny.
There is also a theory that the natives of Cocula worshiped a certain Virgin, María del Río, and that in her name they sang praise and was read as “María ce son”, “the song of María”, which at the same time was pronounced as María se, then Maria she this later was deformed into Maria shi. Although this theory is too elaborate.

So many theories and there is no tangible explanation to describe the origin of the name Mariachi, distinctive Mexican music groups ... What is your theory?
